The breakdown of males to females visiting websites is 72% to 28% with 17% of the woman struggling with a pornography addiction.  20% of the men and 13% of woman report accessing pornography from work.  These numbers are staggering and echo the growing problem of pornography addiction of today.  These statistics put this problem into perspective.  I have recreantly learned, unofficially, there are approximately 5 SA (Sexaholics Anonymous) meetings daily and 100 per month in just our local Baltimore County area. There is no DSM IV (Diagnostic &Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) diagnosis for pornography addiction, but some have likened it to a substance addition, which includes drugs or alcohol.  There is a release of chemicals in the brain when there is sexual stimulation so if the person is engaged in self-satisfaction it makes sense the chemical high is what the person is getting addicted to instead of the actual image.
Thus a person becomes dependent upon the entire experience in order to obtain the "high" they desire. Similarly, a cocaine addict isn't addicted to cocaine as much as he is addicted to the dopamine released by the brain when he uses cocaine. As a result, individuals may use pornography as a trigger for fantasies that perpetuate a chain of events ultimately enabling them to obtain their euphoric feeling. This result may be why many producers of adult content encourage self-stimulation so the consumer will engage in a behavior that will powerfully reinforce the continued use of pornography as a trigger for the subsequent mood-altering experience .“ (http://open-mind.org/News/SLA/16.htm)
The ability to sit in your own home and click a couple of buttons to get images and fantasies to encourage this stimulation is beyond some people’s ability to fight the impulse.  Being alone with a low risk of being caught, and the need to sooth pain from psychological issues drive some people in this direction.
Dr. Cooper suggests that some of the attraction to pornography & cybersex through the Internet results from the power of accessibility, anonymity, and affordability that is given through online activities. The 3-A's provide an opportunity for many who would not otherwise engage in consumption of pornography a chance to explore their curiosity without a high risk of being discovered. Unfortunately, too many of these same individuals get caught in the trap of pornography addiction.” (http://open-mind.org/News/SLA/16.htm
